Losing or maintaining weight is one thing but gaining muscle tone is a quite another – as anyone who has sweated their way through intense exercise routines can attest. That’s where the technology behind Emsculpt comes in. Emsculpt can help certain individuals boost fat burning and muscle toning through a series of treatments that use high-intensity electromagnetic technology. The treatment is FDA approved for muscle toning and is the first and only device of its kind in the world.
How Does Emsculpt Work?
The treatment works by applying a magnetic field that stimulates and contracts the targeted muscles 20,000 times in 30 minutes. That’s the equivalent of doing 20,000 crunches or squats in that time period. Because the technique is aerobic, the oxygen demand on the body is lower. That means patients don’t build up lactic acid, as they would in traditional exercise, and won’t experience prolonged or deep soreness that comes with anaerobic workouts.
Patients who have used Emsculpt compare the post-treatment feeling to a superficial soreness that you might experience after laughing hard; you’ll feel it, but without the pain that usually comes after a lactic acid-building workout.
When the muscle contractions occur, they burn energy, just as your body would in a traditional workout. Just as any muscle burning energy would do, your Emsculpt-treated muscles pull energy from stored fat, causing a reduction in fat cells as a side effect of the toning treatment.
While the technology is new, studies show that it’s very effective: there is a progressive increase over the first six months post-treatment in both new muscles tone and the loss of fat.
- 30 days post-treatment: increase in muscle tone is approximately 19%, decrease in fat is 23%
- 90 days post-treatment: increase in muscle tone is approximately 26%, decrease in fat is between 25-30%
- Six months post-treatment: results begin to level off
Who is the Ideal Candidate for Emsculpt?
Emsculpt is best suited for someone who is within 15 to 20 pounds of their goal weight and is trying to tone up and sculpt away unwanted fat in hard-to-target areas. Patients’ body mass index (BMI) should ideally be around 33 or below for Emsculpt to work most effectively. The procedure works for both men and women.
An Emsculpt protocol involves four 30-minute treatments in a two-week time frame, and treatments take place with a 48-hour to 72-window between each one to give the muscles a break. Patients can also choose to do maintenance treatments once 30 days has passed from the end of their last treatment. Each patient is unique, though, so recommendation vary depending on goals and the response to the initial treatment.
Areas of treatment include the abdomen, buttocks, quadriceps, and hamstrings.
There is also a choice between protocols that target both muscle tone and fat loss and targeting muscle tone only without decreasing fat.
